Rose Quartz for the Skin

In Egypt it was known that Rose Quartz had many benefits for the skin. Masks were created from the crystal and used as a beauty treatment. I would imagine that they must have been heavy. There is a easier way to get the benefits from this crystal for out skin.

Rose Quartz Elixir

Before you start be sure to charge the crystal with your intentions. So, let's say you want to attack those wrinkles you can say "Thank you for eliminating my eye wrinkles." This has to be heart felt and you want to be holding the crystal and repeating your intention multiple times until you feel comfortable that your intention has been recorded in the crystal.

Any type of glass container
Filtered water do not use tap water
1 or more Rose Quartz crystals

Place the water and crystals in a glass container and place it outside during the full moon (full moon tomorrow September 16, 2016) do not put out in the sun as the UV rays will cause it to fade. Remember color has a frequency and the lose of color will cause the crystal to lose energy.

You can also make the elixir when there is no full moon just place the crystals in water and let it sit for 24 hours.

It is recommended that you only make what you will use as the healing properties fade quickly.

Kombucha for Healthy Skin?

Kombucha for healthy skin? Really? I started brewing kombucha again and want to sell it at the farmer's market with the skin care products. Then I thought about our banner "Heavenly Bodies Organic Skin Care." Well, I figured if I could find out that kombucha was good for the skin it wouldn't be a problem to incorporate into the Heavenly Bodies line. You will never believe what I uncovered.

Aids With Acne

I came across multiple bloggers who stated that their acne cleared up while drinking kombucha on a daily basis. It makes sense considering that our skin is one way the body detoxes and lets us know that there is something wrong. What is it? The gut bacteria is off, kombucha is a probiotic which means it aids in replenishing our good gut bacteria which for most of needs to tended to and we usually neglect.

Benefits of Kombucha Externally

Using kombucha externally on the skin also has benefits. Just put aside some unflavored kombucha and let it really ferment about 14 days. You can put right on to your face as a toner it has been shown to aid with the following. You can also click here for a recipe to create a toner with kombucha.
  • Reduce redness
  • Reduce wrinkles and fine lines
  • Reduce dry skin
  • Reduce uneven skin tone
  • Reduce pores
  • Reduce dark circles
  • Reduce puffiness around the eyes
  • Reduce varicose veins
  • Increase collagen
  • Increase oxygen
  • Increase protein production
  • Increase cell regeneration

Scoby Facial Mask

You know all those SCOBYs that come with brewing your own kombucha? Well, they are great to use as a face mask, those who have used it state softer, glowing skin. It is believed that the SCOBY aids in the circulation of the skin which aids in regenerating skin cells. The SCOBY also is said to act like a natural acid pull due to its PH and aids in shedding dead skin cells. Some who used this mask stated that they were concerned how they would smell afterwards, but said it absorbed into their skin so fast there was no negative smell afterward.

Warning: Some have reported that there was redness after using the SCOBY facial mask, but stated it did not last long.

SCOBY Band Aids

Sounds kind of funny to use a SCOBY which is bacteria and yeast as a band aid doesn't it? The fact is that the PH aids to prevent the growth of harmful bacteria. As mentioned above it aids in increased skin cell regeneration along with tissue. I found various testimonies stating they used a piece of a SCOBY on a wound, cut, burn, or even an insect bite. For burns, cuts, and wounds cut off a piece of the SCOBY the size of the wound and put some gauze over it with tape to hold it in place.

Warning: Stinging has been reported.

Storing SCOBYs

From everything I read seems SCOBYs used for these purposes can be kept. Just be sure to keep them in a separate jar and label it.

Organic Skin Care Product

After learning about the benefits of Kombucha for the skin I started to incorporate it into some of my formulations. Check out the Heavenly Bodies Eye & Face Cream, Versatile and Soothe & Cleanse which contain Kombucha.

Hormones & Skin Health

I just spent the week listening to various speakers on the topic hormones via the Women's Wellness Summit. I had no idea how much our hormones effect various aspects of our lives. The thought never occurred to me that the reason women break out once a month is due to the hormones. Kind of a duh moment, but sorry never crossed my mind.

At the same time it never occurred to me that hormones are the reason we experience break outs during our teen years. Some women may experience issues with break outs during pregnancy due to hormones. These hormones are tricky little buggers and they play a big role in how our skin looks. The thing is even our lifestyle can play a role on our hormones and our skin.

The Stress Hormone, Cortisol

Stress if not managed properly has an impact on various aspects of our health, but right now let's see how it can affect our skin. I know if I am stressed and keep it in I break out. The main hormone that is causing this issue is cortisol, it is known as the fight or flight hormone and does not know the difference between stress and running from a hungry bear.

When cortisol is triggered it also triggers, for some reason, sebum which controls how much oil is in our skin. As we know oily skin is more prone to break outs. It also causes the skin to become dehyridated which leads to other issues such as the following.
  • Wrinkles
  • Eczema
  • Psoriasis
  • Rosacea
  • Hives
  • Itching
Ladies we all want to have young, beautiful skin, but stressing out over it is the worst thing we can do. Finding ways to deal with stress in a healthy way is the best thing we can do for our skin and over all health.

Testosterone

Testosterone is responsible for controlling sebum, our bodies natural way of providing oil to the skin. In men low testosterone leads to dry skin and a chronic skin condition, such as psoriasis, can become worse. With women to much testosterone leads to oily skin this can happen during puberty or menopause.

DHEA/Dehydroepiandrosterone

DHEA like our other hormones deplete with age and stress. These hormones are responsible for producing collagen which keep our skin firm and toned. As we mature our skin seems to become drier and DHEA aids in triggering the release of oil to hydrate our skin.

Progesterone

Progesterone levels start to decline during our late 30s. When our levels our low we experience a duller apperance in our skin. This hormone is resposible for skin elasticy and circulation. Not only is menopause the reason for a lack of progesterone, but stress also has a negative effect on it.

Thyroid  Hormones

The thyroid gland is actually a source for two hormones called thyroxine  (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3.) When these hormone levels are low, hypothyroidism, it causes dry skin, fine lines, and wrinkles usually become more predominant. Those with low levels may also experience the following.

  • Facial puffiness
  • Cool dry, or waxy skin
  • Thicker skin on the lower legs along with pale or yellowish skin
When we have too many thyroid hormones, hyperthyroidism, the skin becomes warm and moist. This can lead to a rash similar to heat rash especially within folds of the skin. Those with to much of this hormone may also develop pretibial myxedema, localized lesions which may occur on various parts of the body.

Estrogen

Women can experience a loss of estrogen once they reach 40. The loss of estrogen causes various skin issues.

  • Loss of hydration
  • Sagging
  • Thinning skin
  • Fine lines becoming creases
  • Skin around the eyes and lips droop
  • Less blood flows through the skin

Growth Hormone

The growth hormone plays a key role in the health of our skin and again one that depletes as time goes by. It's job is to repair skin cells, when we are low on the growth hormone we may experience the following. Sagging skin all over the body, note that exercise, along with our eating and sleeping habits are key for this hormone.

Keep on Glowing

  • Maintain hormonal levels by exercising 5 - 7 days a week
  • Eat organic whenever possible
  • Avoid toxic skin care products try these instead
  • Deal with stress through a relaxing bath, reading, massage, exercise, meditation
  • Pay attention to the health of your liver as it aids with hormones
  • Have your hormones checked by a health care professional
  • Watch for more posts on using food and herbs to aid with your hormonal balance

Be aware that some of the skin issues here may also be due to another health issue such as poor gut bacteria.

This information is for educational purposes consult with a health care professional for your health needs.

What do you do to keep your hormones in check?
Have you had an experience with your skin due to hormones?

Broccoli Sprout Extract for UV Protection

On my other blog, It's Your Life, I wrote a post on the "Benefits of Broccoli Sprouts." Broccoli sprouts are one of the best sprouts we can eat because of the compound sulforphane. During my research of this amazing compound I came across an article on how broccoli sprout extract protects our skin from the ultra violet rays of the sun.

Sulforphane and Our Skin

Fifteen years ago Paul Talalay M.D. a professor of pharmacology and colleagues first identified the compound sulforphane in broccoli sprout extract. He noted that the extract does not act like all the sunscreen products we find on the store shelves. The products in the stores have been created to absorb UV rays. Sulforphane on the other hand works inside the body by triggering enzymes. These are protective enzymes which actually defend the cells against UV damage.

Another beneficial aspect of sulforphane in the broccoli sprout extract is that it lasts for several days after being applied. The article did not say why, but I think it may be because it is working from inside the body verses outside the body. The sulforphane from the extract I believe penetrates the skin, goes into the skin cells and like the Energizer Bunny it keeps going and going and going.

The Research

The research on how the broccoli sprout extract reacted to UV rays was conducted by a team from the John Hopkins Medical Center. Results from the research was published in an issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in 2007. Testing was first done with success on mouse models to prove Talalay's theroy of sulforphane. Once that was confirmed the team recruited six healthy volunteers for human testing. Volunteers were exposed to a pulse of UV radiation on a one inch diameter of their skin. Volunteers were treated with the extract applied to their skin in various doses.

Results varied according to the doses from 8% to 78% however, it was determined that other factors
had to be taken into consideration, genetics, skin tone, lifestyle, diet, and more. Volunteers with the highest dosage experienced 37% less inflammation and redness from exposure to the UV radiation.
They also tested volunteers who had the extract applied three days prior to the testing with positive results. During the testing other sunscreen products were also tested with no positive results.

Making Broccoli Sprout Extract

Soooo, I searched and searched for a way to create broccoli sprout extract with no results. I also searched to find an actual product and found 1 however, it was for internal use as were all the other products I found. My experience with herbs and creating extracts is to use a high percentage alcohol or vegetable glycerin. I'm thinking we could take the sprouts when they are 3 days old as this is when they contain the most sulforphane and put them in a jar of alcohol or vegetable glycerin for 6 weeks. This is the same process used to create any extract. My next step is to find out how to use it on the skin. I'm thinking about playing and seeing if I can create a lotion using other ingredients that offer UV protection like Shea butter and tamanu oil. I'm sure there are others, but those are the ones I know for sure have the UV protection.

If you found this post helpful please share so others can learn from it.

Cleanse Your Home of Negativity

I had a customer place an order for our Eye & Face Cream. Every batch is handcrafted at the time of orders to ensure freshness. Well, I made the cream and it didn't come our right, I made it 3 more times and each time the oil was separating.

It took me almost 2 years to get this cream the way I wanted it. I learned that emulsifying wax was better than bees wax for making creams as it aids in holding the liquid ingredients together. Just wanted to add that in case any of the readers was thinking ahhhhh I bet she used bees wax.

Panic

Southern man pumped in a panic for information, what did you do different? Did you use a different brand? Are you sure you got the measurements right? Did you follow the recipe? My gosh I did everything all three times, what's different? We began to think, the temperature in the house was different, I had used water from the flow water up the road, which I put through the Berkey, and my daughter was here with her ex-boyfriend's brother, long story.

Living Natural

Because we want to live as natural as possible we have done a lot or research and have been open to a lot of things others are not. One of those things is vibrational frequencies, everything is vibration. Did you ever meet someone or go somewhere and you felt something bad? That is negative vibration, thus the term bad vibes, they are real. These vibrations effect us and the environment we reside in and more.

As we were learning more about the importance of vibrational frequency I borrowed a book from my essential oil lady. The book was called The Hidden Messages in Water by Massaru Emoto who discovered that our thoughts, words, and feelings have an effect on the water. As I thought about that my daughter came to mind. She had just been through a lot and wasn't in the clear, first her boyfriend totaled her car by hitting a deer, her roommates moved out, she lost her job, and then her boyfriend broke up with her all within a one month time period, wow!!! We decided it was her negative vibrations in the house that caused the 3 bad batches as it does contain water.

The Solution

I felt I needed to wait until she left before I attempted to create another batch. My customer was very understanding and didn't think I was weird. I know that smudging with a sage  stick is very powerful for ridding a home of negativity, but could not find anywhere close to us that sold them. So, I turned to essential oils, but my essential oil lady did not have sage. I did some research and found some other oils that also helped to dispel negative energy and she also had some suggestions.

My essential oil lady had Juniper and White Angelica and told me to my hand over my heart chakra while holding the bottle, and ask the universe if I needed Juniper to cleanse the negativity in my house. If the answer is yes your body will start to move forward, if it is no your body will move backwards. This is caused by the vibrational frequency of the item and the universe. This was something new to me, but I took both of them home and got a yes from both, but the pull from the White Angelica was stronger therefore that was the one I used. So, here is how you can create a spray to rid your home or any space of negative energy.

Negative Dispelling Spray

4 oz glass bottle
1 tsp vodka
20 drops of essential oil
3 oz of filtered water

Make sure your bottle is a dark color if you will be storing some of your spray. This should then be stored in a dark cool place to ensure the oil holds its medicinal properties. Put all of the ingredients in the bottle and shake it up. Start at the front door like you are coming in and start spraying to the right. Be sure to spary around each doorway on both sides. I have also read that you should open a door or window to let the negative energy out while doing this, but I didn't. I did this 2 days in a row starting on a Wednesday, I was told to wait until Saturday to create the cream. I did and the cream came out just the way it is suppose to.

Oils for Dispelling Negativity

  • Cedarwood
  • Cypress
  • Frankincense
  • Juniper
  • Lavender
  • Myrrh use with one of the other oils to enhance it
  • Palo Santo
  • Rose
  • Sage

White Angelica

White Angelica is a blend created by Young Living Essential Oils. It contains 9 different oils which are as follows.
  • Bergamot - Used for emotional stress
  • Geranium
  • Hyssop -
  • Melissa - Balance emotions
  • Myrrh
  • Rose
  • Sandalwood
  • Spruce
  • Ylang Ylang - Control negative feelings
Always be sure to research the oils before using. While they are natural some should not be used by certain individuals. Make sure to purchase a quality oil from a reputable source, not all oils are pure.

Other Ways to Clear Negative Energy

  • Plants
  • Open windows with sunlight coming through
  • Himalayan Sea Salt lamps or the salt put into a earthen bowls put into rooms
  • Smudging white sage stick us the same way as the spray
  • Black Tourmaline placed in each room

Okay bottom line if you are creating a product that requires water and it doesn't turn out right, check the vibes going through your space.
